Steadfast : a Story by Mercedes Lackey

I don't usually extol straight romances; this one is not just a romance, but it is oh, so romantic!  Many stories get, sort of, tunnel vision, and use a textbook route from girl meets girl, all the way to the end.  The more interesting stories take their time, developing the characters and the personalities of the protagonists, sometimes providing background, supplying a lot of dialog; all this is good.

This story, in contrast, is set in a world essentially England in the late 1800, early 1900s, in any case after the Boer War, a war between the Dutch and the British, fought in their colonies in Africa.  The war comes into the story only tangentially—one of the gentlemen is a veteran of the Boer War.

The world of the book is even a little more complicated, because—there is magic.  Some people have magic, and some people don't.  Those who do have magic, have little fairies floating around them.  Only those who have magic can see them, and only if their magic is strong enough!  There are sylphs, fire spirits, nymphs, salamanders, those sorts of magical beings, called elementals.

There are four sorts of magic: fire magic, air magic, water magic, and earth magic.   Each kind has different elementals: fire spirits, salamanders, etc are fire elementals; sylphs are air elementals; water nymphs are water elementals, and so on.

The main character is Katie.  She was a dancer in a circus.  One day, there is a huge fire in the caravan of her family, and her parents are burned to death.  The circus boss quickly advises Katie to marry the Strongman.  He's abusive, and a drunk, and after a few months of this, Katie escapes into the woods, and finds herself among people called Travelers, who are essentially gypsies, who take her in, give her a home, and talk her down from her paralyzing fear and anxiety.  Finally, they encourage her to head out to a nearby town called Brighton, a seaside resort.

In a music hall in Brighton, there are two guys: the doorman Jack, who has lost a leg in the Boer War, and is a fire magician; and Lionel, the music hall 'Magician,' who performs magic tricks, helped in a minor way by his air elementals; yes, he's an air mage.

When Katie stumbles into the music hall looking for work, and stammers that she can dance, Jack sees that she's surrounded by several fire elementals!

Katie is hired as the Magician's assistant (which involves a little dancing), and slowly builds up her confidence.  It is difficult for Jack and Lionel to break it to her that she's a magician; in fact, that magic is real.  But it happens one evening, and Katie has a difficult time believing the whole thing.  But finally, she does.

After a lot of interesting developments, Katie's fearsome husband shows up, gives her a painful beating, moves into her house, and blackmails her into supporting him, giving him her entire paycheck, and cooking for him, because he says that he'll break the back of the crippled doorman, who he knows is her friend.  Katie knows that her husband is a murderer, and is petrified with fear.

There are lots of fascinating people in the story, all of them essential to the plot, in one way or another.  There's a lot of historical detail; it makes the story fascinating.  In the Enola Holmes stories (written by a completely different person, but it's roughly the same historical period) the details are a lot more harrowing, but equally fascinating.  It seems very much as though writers of that time were determined to delineate the social abuses of that time.   No doubt fiction set in these times, written a century or so in the future, will describe the horrors of these decades in gruesome detail.

I think this is one of Mercedes Lackey's best stories.

Ella Emhoff

I had realized that Ella Emhoff, Kamala Harris's stepdaughter, was cute when I saw her in various news bulletins about Kamala Harris.  She's sort of a fashionista; in fact she's totally in the fashion scene, a scene to which I'm s complete outsider.

She looked very familiar, and I had been puzzling over why.  It finally dawned on me that she resembled not one, but two different girls I knew in graduate school—not closely, but just enough to have a crush on them!  All through college, I had been watching mostly guys.  (I liked the nerdy guys, who seemed to know something, apart from being just jocks; I drifted into the company of nerds and goth chicks, who were really where it was at.  Some goth chicks were OK with me hanging out with them; others were suspicious, clearly signaling that I could either be a goth, or I could just leave them alone.  The goth community in my school were a bit peculiar.)

Well.  I keep hoping that when a girl I like is heavily into fashion, that she'd get out of it sooner or later; it has always seemed sort of a superficial thing to be into.  Ella is into knitting, which is not a trivial hobby, so it looks as though Ella is into clothes for the long haul.

I love the way Ella supports her step-mother so enthusiastically.  Her face just glows when she's cheering her on!  So far, everything Kamala Harris has said and done are totally fine with me.  Her plans for the border: she needs to keep an eye on what the country wants.  No president ought to just follow his or her personal preferences in that area, something that Trump never understood.

As far as taxation is concerned: it depends on what the country needs for the programs it is planning.  The Pentagon will happily accept any leftover cash in the treasury, but that's not in everybody's interest.

Foreign policy: again, the ideas thrown out during campaigning are all well and good, but much of what is actually done depends on what is going on out there.  The US policy towards Israel and the Palestinians isn't something that can be explained in one sentence.  Kamala Harris gave the simplest, clearest description about her preferences that she could have during her acceptance speech.  I just can't paraphrase it here.

Social Services: Harris and Elizabeth Warren both want similar things.  They want to prevent companies getting so big that they can dictate retail prices.  If all the gas companies were acquired by one owner, you can just imagine how prices would skyrocket.

And so on.  Preventing developers from buying up all the new homes and renting them out.  (Trump would hate that.)  Passing a federal law that allows abortion.

Wow, I got sidetracked; I was talking about Ella.  She's cute; I hope she stays supportive!

Caitlin Clark

All sorts of unauthorized accounts, such as 'Caitlin Clark Fans' on Fb, post pics of her, asking 'Isn't she awesome?'

Of course, I think she is, but I'm not sure whether a "like" benefits CC, or is even reported to her.  Often, there are really low-class guys who say, in the comments, that she's a guy.  By 2024 standards, that's really hurtful.  I happen to believe that women's basketball should not allow men to play in it (except maybe for special exhibition games), and vice versa.  Some day things might be different, but today a typical woman cannot compete with a typical man.  Not to mention that CC might be hurt by the comment.

Šo far, in all the interviews Caitlin has given, that I've heard, she has never been vicious.  That alone, I believe, has won her a lot of fans. If she continues to play basketball the way she is playing now, I think she would earn an excellent reputation, even if she doesn't win a ton of awards.  I try to ignore all the commentators, and statistics wranglers, but it's getting annoyingly difficult.  There's a small possibility that if Caitlin doesn't enjoy the game anymore, the WNBA is going to lose her.  If she starts saving her earnings furiously, that would be a danger sign...

Kay.

P.S.  Gosh, I just saw a 'best of' type collection of Caitlin Clark getting roughed up really badly.  They were not all from the same match, but, wow.  I would have walked off the court.  (Probably, though, they'd never waste time roughing me up.)

I'm not going to say anything; not that Caitlin will be reading my Blog, but that it's my understanding that too much sympathizing makes the player feel worse.  My instinct is to retaliate, but she just can't do that.

And then, I read that The Fever has the best offense in the league!  It's that sort of a consolation prize for getting beaten up?

My information is a few days old, so all this is probably out of date, and the Fever might have broken by now!  Just kidding; a little nursing joke there ...

Miscellany

I don't have any major thoughts to lay on you, but I do have several minor ones.

First off all: there's an actress who got left out of my list of favorites: Keira Knightley.  I loved her in Star Wars 1: The Phantom Menace,  with Natalie Portman, and also Bend it like Beckham.  The only problem is that I find her hard to follow when she gets excited!

Next: I watched the Democrat National Convention, the fourth and final day.  My friends came over, though I have a smaller TV than they do.  I was beginning to think that it was a waste of time, because there wasn't an outcome I was waiting for; I knew what was going to happen.  But it was worth waiting for (though they drew it out for a long as it was possible to stand it).  And Kamala Harris was dignified and presidential, for the most part.  But I thought that the Trump-bashing was a little more prolonged than I thought was needed.  I began to realize that, though I had thought I led the  World in my frustration with Trump and the Republican Party, I wasn't even close.  There were at least three Republicans who spoke, and they were very bitter.

I think what's going on is that Trump's fans basically believe that elections won't work for them.  Elections had brought them Obama, and Obamacare, and Bill Clinton, and other things they don't like, such as recognition of Climate Change.  And they're going to lose this election just barely, and they're going to believe that it was stolen.

Holy Moley

Watched the Democrat Convention on Tuesday night.  Amazing.  Michelle Obama was channeling me!  No, seriously; every sentence was perfect.

I'm alarmed; what're they going to do today, to top that?  Taylor Swift?

Kamala Harris's stepchildren, and Kamala's husband, Doug, were adorable.  Barak Obama was great.  Hilary Clinton was great.  The Republican mayor of Mesa, Arizona, was good.  (Mesa is the home of Arizona State U.)  AOC was fabulous.

Bernie Sanders was excellent, but his delivery was only B- I felt as if I was in a classroom!  But that's Bernie.  Several other speakers, all good.  This could happen.

So Darned Cute!

Another Caitlin Clarke Fangirl post!

She has such a wonderful smile!

My Facebook knows that I like Caitlin posts  (and they show you what you like to see, just to keep you coming back), so there was a couple of posts about her this morning.  But there were basketball-type abbreviations, that I have no clue about, and not interested in finding out ... It's sad.

Today, in Chicago at the Convention, it's Biden and Jill day.  There'll be other speakers, for certain.  Well, you know what I'll be doing ...

Always a Teacher

Anyone who has read Helen at Westfield will know that I was a teacher!

I wasn't one very long, but really, I don't think I could be anything but a teacher.  I try to be a writer, and a blogger, and a no-good unemployed bum, but always there's that hidden teacher inside that sneaks out, to show people how to do stuff, whether they want it or not!  All that after just a couple of years of teaching; imagine what I'd be like if I taught for, like 15 years?

But, when I take a liking to someone, I want them to do well; to make good friends, to find a satisfying occupation; to be a good role model, to be healthy.  To find a decent partner.

You probably don't believe that someone who's barely in their forties can have ambitions like that for people they don't even know well.  But my mom was a teacher, and she'd mutter things like that about her students, long after she had stopped teaching them; and it has sort of rubbed off on me.

And this is how I feel about Caitlin Clark.  I want her to be a good basketball player, but more than that, a good example to kids; both black kids and white kids. I don't wish a lot of money for her, though I'm sure she'll be financially successful.   I don't need to wish great beauty for her; she's gorgeous already.  They say she was an excellent student in college; well good for her. All I'm saying is that I wish for her to become an admirable human being in the ways that a celebrity isn't usually admirable.  One of Mom's students became a drummer in a band, and she was so pleased!  He'd appear on TV with the band, and she'd smile all over her face, and point at him.  "He was my student!" she'd say, and we'd tease her!

Well, of course Caitlin isn't my student.  All I can claim is that I thought she was awesome way back in 2023!

Tomatoes!

Wow, went to a Farmer's Market with some friends, and bought some tomatoes.  Just ate one.   Never buying supermarket tomatoes again!!!

They had lots of cheese selections, that I was a little suspicious of, raw milk—not pasteurized—also suspicious; lots of baked goods, of which I bought a couple; honey, mushrooms, herbs, breakfast sandwiches!  I could have gained a few pounds just looking at the stuff!  Bread!  If I went more regularly, I'd know which types to pick .. lots of little kids, pets, puppies, mostly, on leashes.  What a wonderful panoply of happy people!  Oh! They're here for Little League!  (Our town, and our sister town of South Williamsport are where their world series is played.)

Well, anyway, I imagine it's mostly like this in other weekends, too.

Republican Party is Alive!

I never thought that I would say that so cheerfully, but I am!  I have never voted Republican, and I hope never to.  Similarly, there are lots of Republicans who thought they'd never vote blue.

But there is a growing agreement that Trump has made a zombie out of the GOP.  Reportedly many Republicans are abandoning the MAGA leadership, and are going to vote for Harris and Walz this November.  They declare that the Harris-Walz ticket stands for what they consider traditional family values; what the GOP would have stood for in years gone by.

Christians, who had been following Trump for the last few years, are heading towards the Democrat tent.  Many recent immigrants, and descendants of immigrants, are deeply insulted at the way they have been portrayed by the Trump camp, and say: enough is enough.  Mitt Romney never liked Trump.  Lots of Republican former Congressmen and women are tired of Trump.  Nikki Haley has been grinding away at the negative image of people of Indian descent that Trump presents, and I won't be surprised if she decides she can't take it anymore.  Liz Cheney.  The Bush family.

The interesting thing is that they don't describe themselves as former Republicans!  No, they're Republicans still.  They just have to wait it out until Trump is gone.

This is what I have always said:  Trump has hijacked the GOP.

Anticipating the Convention

Tuesday, 13, August 2024

What will the speakers say at the Convention?  I've only watched three of them (conventions, I mean), but I heard Hillary Clinton's comment about a basket of deplorables in 2016, and I knew right then that it was a tactless thing to say.  Hillary will be invited to speak this year as well, and I think, personally, that she ought to apologize for having said that.  I don't like some of Trump's circle of advisors now, and I didn't like them then.  But the followers of Trump are sheep without a shepherd (of course Trump himself is not any kind of shepherd), and it doesn't make sense to call the rank and file names.

Also speaking are Bill Clinton, Barak Obama, of course Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, possibly Josh Shapiro, Gretchen Whitmer, Pete Buttigieg, and probably Chuck Schumer.

I think, though, they should get Michelle Obama.  Angry speakers are easy to find, but might not get the TV viewers fired up to vote.  Michelle Obama, in contrast, strikes a perfectly civilized tone, and leaves everyone feeling, well, more noble, and well-intentioned!

Good Times

Hello, dear friends!

I keep scanning the news for more bad tidings, but there don't seem to be any.  (Trump and his team seem to be planning to sabotage the election once again, but I don't see much that we can do. Meanwhile, a lot of voters, both Dem and Gop are getting a little tired of these shenanigans, and lots of Republican downballot candidates will hopefully not join with shady saboteurs.)  All the news is positive; Trump seems to be in a terrible funk, and Kamala Harris seems to be ebullient and upbeat, and Walz is striking the perfect tone.

Meanwhile, I'm running out of stories to read; I've read my own stories so often, I find myself skipping most of the chapters, to get to the good ones!

I realized that Yraid is the closest thing to a humorous story I have written, but even that gets serious now and then.  Oh wait, Little John Finds a Friend is a funny story!  Concerto has funny episodes, but is basically serious.  (I'm a little sorry that I could not—or just did not—find a happy ending for Sita's friend Vicky, who accompanied her to her treatment clinic.   I guess Melanie could be the best solution for her ... )

Tommy, Helen's step sister, had a crush on an internet porn star from the Czech Republic, named Sofia.  Somewhere along the line, I took out almost all the stories about this Czech chick; as a result, some of the parts of Little John don't make a lot of sense.  It might be time to put some of the Sofia stories together.  I have so little energy, every little thing looks like a huge project...

The Bangles

One of my favorite singing groups is the Bangles.  Their attraction was two fold: they were cute, and their music was fabulous!  The word 'fabulous' seems to apply to something that's widely popular; it means, literally famed in fable, so that's not a personal attitude towards a performer.  But in my case, I thought that they're terrific since I was a teenager.

They were super musical.  I think at least two of them have been song writers.

Susanna Hoffs has an interesting voice that stands out from the other voice, which gives their songs a texture that the Beach Boys could not have, with their homogeneous sound.
