Ella Emhoff
I had realized that Ella Emhoff, Kamala Harris's stepdaughter, was cute when I saw her in various news bulletins about Kamala Harris. She's sort of a fashionista; in fact she's totally in the fashion scene, a scene to which I'm a complete outsider.
She looked very familiar, and I had been puzzling over why. It finally dawned on me that she resembled not one, but two different girls I knew in graduate school—not closely, but just enough to have a crush on them! All through college, I had been watching mostly guys. (I liked the nerdy guys, who seemed to know something, apart from being just jocks; I drifted into the company of nerds and goth chicks, who were really where it was at. Some goth chicks were OK with me hanging out with them; others were suspicious, clearly signaling that I could either be a goth, or I could just leave them alone. The goth community in my school were a bit peculiar.)
Well. I keep hoping that when a girl I like is heavily into fashion, that she'd get out of it sooner or later; it has always seemed sort of a superficial thing to be into. Ella is into knitting, which is not a trivial hobby, so it looks as though Ella is into clothes for the long haul.
I love the way Ella supports her step-mother so enthusiastically. Her face just glows when she's cheering her on! So far, everything Kamala Harris has said and done are totally fine with me. Her plans for the border: she needs to keep an eye on what the country wants. No president ought to just follow his or her personal preferences in that area, something that Trump never understood.
As far as taxation is concerned: it depends on what the country needs for the programs it is planning. The Pentagon will happily accept any leftover cash in the treasury, but that's not in everybody's interest.
Foreign policy: again, the ideas thrown out during campaigning are all well and good, but much of what is actually done depends on what is going on out there. The US policy towards Israel and the Palestinians isn't something that can be explained in one sentence. Kamala Harris gave the simplest, clearest description about her preferences that she could have during her acceptance speech. I just can't paraphrase it here.
Social Services: Harris and Elizabeth Warren both want similar things. They want to prevent companies getting so big that they can dictate retail prices. If all the gas companies were acquired by one owner, you can just imagine how prices would skyrocket.
And so on. Preventing developers from buying up all the new homes and renting them out. (Trump would hate that.) Passing a federal law that allows abortion.
Wow, I got sidetracked; I was talking about Ella. She's cute; I hope she stays supportive!

Caitlin Clark
All sorts of unauthorized accounts, such as 'Caitlin Clark Fans' on Fb, post pics of her, asking 'Isn't she awesome?'
Of course, I think she is, but I'm not sure whether a "like" benefits CC, or is even reported to her. Often, there are really low-class guys who say, in the comments, that she's a guy. By 2024 standards, that's really hurtful. I happen to believe that women's basketball should not allow men to play in it (except maybe for special exhibition games), and vice versa. Some day things might be different, but today a typical woman cannot compete with a typical man. Not to mention that CC might be hurt by the comment.
Šo far, in all the interviews Caitlin has given, that I've heard, she has never been vicious. That alone, I believe, has won her a lot of fans. If she continues to play basketball the way she is playing now, I think she would earn an excellent reputation, even if she doesn't win a ton of awards. I try to ignore all the commentators, and statistics wranglers, but it's getting annoyingly difficult. There's a small possibility that if Caitlin doesn't enjoy the game anymore, the WNBA is going to lose her. If she starts saving her earnings furiously, that would be a danger sign...
Kay.
P.S. Gosh, I just saw a 'best of' type collection of Caitlin Clark getting roughed up really badly. They were not all from the same match, but, wow. I would have walked off the court. (Probably, though, they'd never waste time roughing me up.)
I'm not going to say anything; not that Caitlin will be reading my Blog, but that it's my understanding that too much sympathizing makes the player feel worse. My instinct is to retaliate, but she just can't do that.
And then, I read that The Fever has the best offense in the league! It's that sort of a consolation prize for getting beaten up?
My information is a few days old, so all this is probably out of date, and the Fever might have broken by now! Just kidding; a little nursing joke there ...

Miscellany
I don't have any major thoughts to lay on you, but I do have several minor ones.
First off all: there's an actress who got left out of my list of favorites: Keira Knightley. I loved her in Star Wars 1: The Phantom Menace, with Natalie Portman, and also Bend it like Beckham. The only problem is that I find her hard to follow when she gets excited!
Next: I watched the Democrat National Convention, the fourth and final day. My friends came over, though I have a smaller TV than they do. I was beginning to think that it was a waste of time, because there wasn't an outcome I was waiting for; I knew what was going to happen. But it was worth waiting for (though they drew it out for as long as it was possible to stand it). And Kamala Harris was dignified and presidential, for the most part. But I thought that the Trump-bashing was a little more prolonged than I thought was needed. I began to realize that, though I had thought I led the World in my frustration with Trump and the Republican Party, I wasn't even close. There were at least three Republicans who spoke, and they were very bitter.
I think what's going on is that Trump's fans basically believe that elections won't work for them. Elections had brought them Obama, and Obamacare, and Bill Clinton, and other things they don't like, such as recognition of Climate Change. And they're going to lose this election just barely, and they're going to believe that it was stolen.

Holy Moley
Watched the Democrat Convention on Tuesday night. Amazing. Michelle Obama was channeling me! No, seriously; every sentence was perfect.
I'm alarmed; what're they going to do today, to top that? Taylor Swift?
Kamala Harris's stepchildren, and Kamala's husband, Doug, were adorable. Barak Obama was great. Hilary Clinton was great. The Republican mayor of Mesa, Arizona, was good. (Mesa is the home of Arizona State U.) AOC was fabulous.
Bernie Sanders was excellent, but his delivery was only B- I felt as if I was in a classroom! But that's Bernie. Several other speakers, all good. This could happen.

So Darned Cute!
Another Caitlin Clark Fangirl post!
She has such a wonderful smile!
My Facebook knows that I like Caitlin posts (and they show anyone what they like to see, just to keep them coming back), so there were a couple of posts about her this morning. But there were basketball-type abbreviations, that I have no clue about, and not interested in finding out ... It's sad.
Today, in Chicago at the Convention, it's Biden and Jill day. There'll be other speakers, for certain. Well, you know what I'll be doing ...

Always a Teacher
Anyone who has read Helen at Westfield will know that I was a teacher!
I wasn't one very long, but really, I don't think I could be anything but a teacher. I try to be a writer, and a blogger, and a no-good unemployed bum, but always there's that hidden teacher inside that sneaks out, to show people how to do stuff, whether they want it or not! All that after just a couple of years of teaching; imagine what I'd be like if I taught for, like 15 years?
But, when I take a liking to someone, I want them to do well; to make good friends, to find a satisfying occupation; to be a good role model, to be healthy. To find a decent partner.
You probably don't believe that someone who's barely in their forties can have ambitions like that for people they don't even know well. But my mom was a teacher, and she'd mutter things like that about her students, long after she had stopped teaching them; and it has sort of rubbed off on me.
And this is how I feel about Caitlin Clark. I want her to be a good basketball player, but more than that, a good example to kids; both black kids and white kids. I don't wish a lot of money for her, though I'm sure she'll be financially successful. I don't need to wish great beauty for her; she's gorgeous already. They say she was an excellent student in college; well good for her. All I'm saying is that I wish for her to become an admirable human being in the ways that a celebrity isn't usually admirable. One of Mom's students became a drummer in a band, and she was so pleased! He'd appear on TV with the band, and she'd smile all over her face, and point at him. "He was my student!" she'd say, and we'd tease her!
Well, of course Caitlin isn't my student. All I can claim is that I thought she was awesome way back in 2023!
